TO-DAY'S WEATHER,
HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST. Tha following weather forecast for 24 hours from 7 a.m. to-day was supplied to ns by Mr. H. M. Vincent last evening The cyclone is moving slowly southward clown the east coast, and is still of considerable intensity. The general outlookindicates further unsettled weather, with additional heavy rain, particularly in northern and east coast districts. Scattered thunderstorms are expected, especially in the north. Easterly to southeasterly winds, moderate to strong, increasing strong to gale at times. Rough to heavy seas on the east coast, and in Cook Strait; moderate on the west coast. Expect . milder temperatures. Rivers flooded. A temporary improvement should follow shortly in the north. Barometer, midnight, falling .. 29-30 iii. Midnight, Monday .. .. 29.70 in.. GOVERNMENT REPORT. The Government meteorologist reported last evening as follows: —The cyclone is centred near Cape Maria and is still very intense. Pressure is falling over the Tasman Sen. Indications are for strong south-east to easterly winds to gales north of Greymouth and Kaikoura, elsewhere moderate, but freshening east to northerly winds. Seas rough io heavy north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, elsewhere moderate, but rising on the east coast. East to south winds in the eastern Tasman Sea; strong to gale forco in the northern portion, with rough sens; model ate to fresh in the southern portion with moderate to rather rough seas. Weather still thick and stormy from Nelson and Marlborough northward, with general rain. Many heavy falls and flooded rivers. Elsewhere dull and misty, with rain gradually setting in. Cold temperatures and snow on the high lands. RAINFALL RECORD. Fall in City (Hehalp gauge): 24 hours ended midnight, May 14 . . ,52in.
