VIVISECTION.

Sir, —Referring to the item in tho Herald of Friday, 10th inst., entitled "No Vivisection," the strict meaning of the Latin derivative, signifying tho cutting of living beings, is no longer adhered to. The word "vivisection" is used u> embrace all investigation on living animals, including poisoning, starving, and inoculating, as every doctor knows. F»n' the Christchurch Hospital authorities !<> state that no vivisection is carried 011 :a the hospital, when animals are ben ;; inoculated with diphtheria and consumption germs, is a gross inis-stat •- mcnt. Tho statement of Mr. Jameson, chairman of tho Christchurch branch of tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, that "there is no cruelty at all, it is entirely painless," is astonishing. To make the assertion that an animal dying of consumption or diphtheria suffers no pain is ridiculous. A little, reorganisation in the ranks of the S.P.G. A. seems desirable. W. J. Conkoiis.
