RESISTING A RANGER.
QUAIL ILLEGALLY KILLED. FINES OF £l2 INFLICTED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ROTORUA, Tuesday. Charges of killing imported game out of season, and also of striking a ranger in the execution of his duty, was laid against Albert J. Brown in the Magistrate's Court to-day before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., and W. J. Gillett, who was with Brown, was charged with killing game out of season, and having game in his possession without lawful authority. Bivv.vn pleaded guilty to killing tho game. Tho ranger, Mr. Cobeldick, pointed out that the minimum fine for resisting a ranger was £lO. He said the assistant ganger searched the car the day before the season opened, and found quail in it. He endeavoured to take possession of them, and had t\Vo or three birds in his hand when Brown pulled them away from him. He, hjowever, managed to retain one of them after a struggle. Mr. Roe, for defendant, said that owing to the ranger taking some hares besides the quail Brown got excited, and snatched some of tho quail out of his hand. Brown was fined £2 on the first charge and £lO on the second, with costs. The first charge against Gillett was withdrawn, and on the second he was fined £5 and costs.
