WORKS IN MOUNT ALBERT.
RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. MORE MONEY THIS WINTER. To relieve unemployment in its district, the Mount Albert Borough Council decided last evening to put in hand permanent reconstruction work on two or three streets as soon as possible and to expedite the preparation of estimates of work for the year. A suggestion that an extra £50,000 should be expended this winter met with the approval of members. The favourable result at the poll last week on the three proposals to provide additional play areas in Mount Albert was commented upon by Mr. A. A. Buckley, and he advocated proceeding with the work immediately. The Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, said plans and estimates had yet to be obtained and approved by the Local Government Loans Board. Until this was done, the work could not be started.
Referring to a motion by Mr. H. L. Kayes, that £150,000 should be spent on work for the unemployed, Mr. Rhodes said the estimates for the year had not yet been compiled. It was a question of procedure, he said, in moving an amendment that the question should be referred to the joint committees, with power to act. The amendment was carried, and it was decided to make some work immediately available. It was stated money was available for works which had already been authorised.
" My desire to see more works started is as great as that of any of the members," said Mr. Rhodes. " Some of the cases of unemployment that have come under my notice are heartbreaking."
