SERVICES RECOGNISED.

harbour board chairman. WORK OF MR. H. R- MACKENZIE. The service of Mr. H. R. Mackenzie as chairman of tho Auckland Harbour Board for the past seven years was recognised yesterday at the first meeting of the newly-elected board in an appreciative resolution.

Mr. M. H. Wynyard, the new man, in moving that the board place on record its high appreciation of Mr. Mackenzie's services, said ho had never sat under a fairer or more impartial chairman. Mr. Mackenzie had made the business of the board his study and his particular hobby. He personally could not hope to acquire all the knowledge that Mr. Mackenzie had of the board's affairs. Mr. Mackenzie had been faithful in the performance of his duties, and had taken a special interest in the improvement works carried out in his term of office. The members had shown' their appreciation of his work by; re-electing him chairman while he was in England. They had wished particularly that he might be able to carry the prestige of his office while abroad.

Mr. T. B. Clay, who seconded the motion, said the members of the late board were unanimous in the opinion that Mr. ■ Mackenzie had carried out his duties in a manner that reflected the very greatest credit upon him. Throughout the seven years his acts had been open to criticism from both the board and the public, but no one had been able to impute a selfish motive to anything that he had done; he had always put the interests of the board - first.

"I can tell you that all the success I have attained was duo to team-work," said Mr. Mackenzie, in returning thanks. "There were no cliques or parties so far as I was concerned. I gave all members the fullest information and received information from them and acted upon it." Ha was glad he had again sought election to the board, and he hoped still to be of assistance to it. (Applause.)
