SEVERE STORM AT SEA.

VESSELS DELAYED BY GALE.

SYDNEY STEAMER A DAY LATE,

Cold and boisterous weather was experienced in Auckland yesterday. A strong wind from the south-east prevailed throughout the day and rain fell at intervals, while rough conditions in the harbour buffeted small craft. Ferry steamers while crossing between the city and the North Shore rolled considerably when beam on to the wind and sea. On the coast the weather is very stormy and is delaying shipping. The Northern Company received advice yesterday that the Apanui was sheltering from a northeast gale at Houhora. Owing to the stormy conditions in the Hauraki Gulf the sailing of the Kawau for Kawau, Leigh and Mangawai was postponed until to-day. The storm is extensivo and is reported to be very severe at sea. The Union Company's Island steamer Tofua, which was scheduled to reach Auckland from Fiji about mid-day yesterday, reported by wireless on Sunday that she was beset by a south-east gale and would not arrive until late last night. Yesterday she reported again that she was further delayed by the storm and would not arrive before to-day. The Huddart-Parker steamer Ulimaroa, with 226 passengers on board, is being delayed by a gale in the Tasman Sea. She left Sydney at mid-day on Friday and was due to reach Auckland about seven o'clock this morning. Yesterday she reported by wireless that she was meeting with very stormy weather and her arrival is now expected to-morrow morning. The barometer, which registered 30.20 in. on Sunday morning, has since fallen steadily. The reading last night was 29.70 in. CONDITIONS AT WHANGAREI. GALE AND HEAVY RAIN.

[Bt TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI. Monday. Stormy weather was experienced in Whangarei at the week-end. Heavy rain yesterday was accompanied by a strong south-easterly wind which developed into a violent gale. These conditions continued during the night and throughout to-day. Considerable damage was done to gardens. This morning the borough electricity supply was interrupted, causing inconvenience to industries using electric power and private homes which have electric stoves.

At 1.30 o'clock this afternoon the barometer reading was 28.83 in., representing a fall of 19 points since 9 a.m. The fall since yesterday was 40 points.
