THE CITY ELECTIONS.

Sir, —Tho local elections certainly produced some curious results. Perhaps tho most patent one. -was the'fact that no fewer than four councillors each polled a bigger vote than tho Mayor did for tho Mayoralty. This means that theso four men can claim more right to represent tho city than tho Mayor himself. This is, to say tho least of it, an electoral paradox. While on tho subject of the election I should like to enter a strong protest against tho state of affairs i; 'as I saw them at tho Chamber of Commerce booth. For confusion worse confounded it would be hard to beat. It looked liko a game of catch-as-catch-can, or .blind man's buff. Electors were trailing their papers about for all the world to se«, and I saw two business men sitting down at a table calmly marking off their papers in tho broadest daylight. Tho City of Auckland is certainly getting a queer reputation for certain things, and not tho least of these queer things is evidently an election which is almost Gilbertian in its diversions. R. M. Thomson*.
