THE REALIST.

A NEW MONTHLY JOURNAL. Plain, sober and distinguished, the very cover of "The Realist," the new English "journal of scientific humanism." is an outward and visible sign of the fare provided within. Articles weighty without heaviness and bright without flippancy make this first number of the journal a notable event in the history of journalism. The editorial board includes sjich well-known names as those of Arnold Bennett, Aldous Huxlev, Mitchison, Sir Frank Baines, Rebecca West, and J. 'B. S. Haldane, all men and women of pre-eminent capacity in many different directiorts.

With the name of the journal and its sub-title, the editorial pages deal thus; " We are aware that perhaps half the readers we should like to be regular will exclaim ' The Realist' 1" We have said so so often ourselves that we feel we can begin by answering this question. As an opening we offer three counterquestions. First, can a better be found ? A widely representative board has sought for weeks for a better. To any _ ordinary suggestion we can only reply, Alieady engaged." Secondly, does not the subtitle go far to explain our purpose ? And thirdly " What's in a name ?" A glance at the contents will show that modern thought is comprehensively represented. Study will disclose the proportion and balance of interests, which we believe the sum of these contributions yields and whicli we purpose in all our numbers to maintain." . Among the outstanding contributions, and as giving an idea of the scope of the journal may be mentioned, " The Progress of the Novel,' by Arnold Bennett; " Scientific Humanism," by Dr. Charles Singer; "Domestic Squabbles in the Courts," bv J. A. R. Cairns; Thames Police Court Magistrate ; " Architecture and Sculpture—An Intimate Relation," by Sir Frank Barnes; " The Wagners, Cosima and Richard, bv Ernest Newman, the famous musical critic: and " Has Labour to fear Science ? by John Gibson. " Tlit> Realist" is published monthly by Mncirri 11 nil fid Company, for the Realist Publishing Company.
