SEQUEL TO SHOOTING.

JUDGE GRANTS PROBATION. HEAVY COSTS. TO BE PAID. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. When Frederick Richardson appeared in the Supreme Court to-day for sentence for assaulting John Armstrong at Papanui on March 8 so as to do actual bodily harm, his counsel, Mr. A. A. McLachlan, mentioned that it was likely a civil claim would bo made against Richardson by Armstrong, who was shot after an altercation.

Mr. McLachlan said that Richardson had, according to all reports, led a blameless and industrious life. Eighteen months ago he had a very severe accident when he was thrown out of a gig, and received concussion. He was four weeks in hospital. Since then he had not enjoyed very good health, and during the time he had been at Paparua awaiting trial his health had been further impaired. Counsel would not say further than that the probation -officer recommended probation. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. A. T. Donnelly, said that when the dispute arose and Richardson fired at the other man he did not think Richardson intended to do any serious injury. It was a case in which leniency might be extended. His Honor remarked that, apart from the offence, Richardson appeared to have lived a good life, and his conduct appeared to have been good except for a hasty temper, which led him to the act for which he now appeared m the Court. In view of the circumstances, accused would bo admitted to probation for two years. Ho must pay the costs of the prosecution, £l9 Ms. . Richardson was allowed six months in which to pay.
