Underwriting arrangements havo been made for tlie issue of Commonwealth 5 per cent. 1945-75 stock to the amount of £12,403,734 in conversion of Queensland per cent, stock maturing on July 1. At the London wool sales to-day 10,689 bales were offered, of which 4186 were New Zealand. There was an excellent selection of Merinos which cleared well and a large offering of New Zealand slipes and scoureds. A good tone prevailed and all sections operated freely at full rates. There were but few withdrawals. New Zealand clips sold as follows: "Waihi," 17id to 16^d; -"Candmacl," 16d to 15^d. THE MARKET BASKET. RETAIL FOOD PRICES. A GUIDE TO HOUSEWIVES. Prices of food supplies this week remain practically unchanged. Fish is now fairly plentiful. In the fruit section navel oranges have eased in values, selling at 2s to 3s a dozen. No mandarines are available this week. Hothouse tomatoes are selling at 3d to lOd per lb. Duck eggs have decreased to 2s'4d a dozen, while hen eggs remain at 3s a dozen. At the Melbourne iiides sales to-day there was better competition. Best parcels sold in sellers' favour. Others were unchanged. MATAMATA STOCK SALE. There was a. good average yarding of cattle at. the. Matamata sale on Wednesday, and all entries sold at late rates. Quotations are: Cattle: Fat cows, t'S 10s U £10: fat heifers, £7 10s to £9 ss; forward-conditioned cows, £5 15a to £7 ss; store cows. £3 to £4 7s lid; dairy cows, £S 10s. Although many Sydney merchants would welcome tho withdrawal of the embargo on New Zealand potatoes it is regarded as improbable that the request of the New Zealand growers to have the restriction lifted during June, July and August will be granted. It is contended that if the embargo were once lifted it would be difficult to reimposo it.
