OLD MUSKET BARREL.

A portion of the barrel of an old musket, about 18in. in length, was tinearthed recently during ploughing operations on land at Kaingaroa, near Kaitaia. The area is the site of an old battle-ground where a marauding Southern tribe met a Northern tribe of Maoris. This battle it is stated, provided the first introduction of muskets to the Northern Maoris and they were practically annihilated by their enemies. Mr: A. H. Long, of Kaingaroa, who has possesssion of the barrel, states it was unearthed by a vounj; Maori, who has been declared "makutu by his people.
