"MISHAPS IN HACK STEEPLES. r VICTORY FOR OUTSIDER. tsr TELEGBAPK. —OWN con "RESPONDENT. J HAWERA, Thursday. The jumping event 3 were interesting and gave a. good line in some respects on important events ahead. In the Telegraph Hack Handicap, first division, Richfield and Denier were the only nnes backed, Richfield's backers losing money for second, place. Denier, the winner, was at a really good price. Denier led at the turn from Richfield. Golden Flower, Ooolmint, Warflame, Joke Form and Hopwood. Richfield challenged in the run in but L. G. Morris finished more strongly on Denier than C. Franco did on Richfield and Denier won by a good neck. Golden Flower wa3 a length and a-half away third, with .Toke Form, Flying Binge and Spring Abbey next. Denier was lucky. Richfield, better ridden, would have won. Golden Flower and •Toke Form ran good races, but Joke Form 5b bad at the barrier. For tho Tongahoe Hurdles Red Fuchsia tvound up a £2 better favourite than Mister Gamp, with fair support for Glengariff and Ripon Abbey. Down the straight Ripon , Abbey wns out six lengths from Gala Day but was coming back to his field at the end of a mile, with Gala Day. Polyphemus. Red Fuchsia. Atnreria and Glen?ariff most prominent, behind him. Mister Gamp made R very fast run from the five furling post which took him to the lead three furlongs from home from Ripon Abbey, Red Fuchsia, Glengariff, Polyphemus and Horomea. Glengariff went up to Mister Gamp racing to the last fence where they rose on terms with Red Fuchsia handy. Glengariff beat Mister Gamp by a head. Red Fuchsia finishing well was three-quarters of a length away with Polyphemus six lengths back fourth. Horomea, Ripon Abbey. Umtali, Vivo, Atareria and Gala Day finished in that order. Glengariff owed his success to Bowden's riding. Mister Gamp went a fine race and extended hi 3 circle of Great Northern admirers. Red Fuchsia also finished very well Polyphemus gave a fair display. ; For the second division of the Telegraph Hack Handicap Aiiway, Second Thought, St. Melba., Monsogne and Havering were ail veil backed. Havering turned for home ahead of Animated, Good Cheer, Bione, Airway and Second Thought. Havering held on to stall off the challenge of Monsogne, who was second, with Second Thought third. Good Cheer was fourth and then came Bione, Ngawhine and St. Melba. Havering Possibly was lucky to beat Monsogne and Second Thought;, neither of whom was lucky on the turn. St. Melba was another unv lucky runner.

In the Hack Steeplechase Mountain Crag. Uralla, Kapuna and Maidos were solidly backed. The winner turned up, however, in an outsider, Highwayman, who was at a long price. Disaster began early when Royal Elm and Mandarine collided at the first fence and Uralla became mixed up with them, losing her rider and Trouble stopped. This reduced the field by four. Alaric ran off at the stand double and Son o' Mine lost his rider. This loft Maidos in charge from Kapuna and Highwayman. Mountain Crag fell at the second fence from home. Highwayman beat Kapuna home by two lengths with Maidos four lengths away third. Huirangi Girl, Pikimai and Chyrria were the only others to finish. The Egmont Steeplechase saw Homan Abbey and Puwhero between them carrying ha,lf the total investments. Roman Abbey led all the way. Puwhero weakened over the last half mile, and Star of the East dropped back through bad jumping. Brigadier Bill went in pursuit of Roman Abbey- but hit hard at the sod wall. Racing to the last fenoe Roman Abbey had a slight lead from Brigadier Bill and Puwhero, with Star of the East dropping further back. Roman Abbey's rider lost a stirrup at the last fence but was able to keep his mount going well enough to beat Brigadier Bill by a length. Gilgai was six lengths away third, with Puwhero another ten .lengths away. Star of the East was next. Roman Abbey gave a great display of jumping. Brigadier Bill's mistake at the sod wall cost him a winning chance. Puwhero failed to stay. Gilgai is one to remember. In the Flying Handicap, the Lady QuexRoyal Mint bracket was a hot favourite with backers, Keddar, Bonogne and Booster also being well supported. Broad Acre turned for home just ahead of Keddar. Lady Quex and Booster, but Booster appeared to meet, some trouble. Keddar ran past Broad Acre and won by a little over a length. Lady Quex. finishing fast on the outside, got up to beat Broad Acre by a neck for second place. Booster was fourth, and Valkon, Epistle, Atholspear and Bonogne were next. Keddar won really well, but Lady Quex was not suited by the ground. Broad Acre just failed to see the distance out. Booster is a likely improver for eprint events The Mcßae Handicap saw Blimp and Ten the best backed, with the winner, Hipo, at double figures. Day Guard and Hipo led six furlongs from home from Teri, Bisox and Goodwill and Mendip. Day Guard and Hipo led round the top from Mendip, Teri, Bisox, Goodwill, Blimp and Manly. Goodwill ran up handy at the turn. Hipo came on to beat the fast finishing Spearmiss by three-quarters of a length. Goodwill was a head away third, with Teri and Blimp right up next. Hipo stayed on very well and Spearmiss came from an impossible place to gain second place. Goodwill was by no means disgraced. Teri just failed to see out the ten furlongs. In the Tawhiti Hack Handicap Skyrider, Kawhakina, Calamine, and Royal Acre were all solidly backed. Kawhakina made a fast move going to the turn and was just behind Clover Leaf. Calamine and Royal Acre as they straightened up. liawhakiila came on in the straight to win easily by two lengths from Royal Acre and Calamine who dead-heated for second. tort Alice was fourth and Clover Leaf. Remora and Miss Pakake were next. Kawhakina put tip a good performance and Calamine and Royal Acre stayed on well. Skyrider failed badly. Clover Leaf is a likely improver. SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. Frodice was withdrawn from the Cornwall Handicap at 9 a.m. yesterday. CANTERBURY NOTES. ABERFELDY GALLOPS WELL, [BY TELEGBAPH.— OWN COBRESP.ONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The track work at Riccarton this morning was not of an exciting character. The No. 1 grass track provided fast going, while the plough was in excellent order. Not many horses were sent along fast on the flat, while only a few jumpers were schooled. Aberfeldy galloped nine furlongs by himself and hit out in great stylo all the way, finishing strongly. The last mile occupied 1.44 1-5. It was a good performance. R. W. King will Jeave to-morrow night with the Quin Abbey gelding, who is to race over hurdles at the Wanganui meeting next week I. Tilson will accompany him to do the tiding. Wharncliffe (E. Shaw) and Lord Ranald were associated in a school over eight of the steeplechase fences. Wharncliffe gave a creditable exhibition, though far from perfect. With soma more education he should be a good croes-country prospect. The hunter Lord Ranald was responsible for a firstclass display of jumping. Wharncliffe subsequently worked oil the flat. He was quite sound alter hiß work, and Mr. J. S. Barrett. who was present to see Ins jumper in action, subsequently decided to send the horse North for the "Wanganui meeting. He is not at his best yet, but a race in the Wanganui Steeplechase should be invaluable. T. H. Gillett will take him North to-morrow night, while E. Shaw will do the Charta, with assistance of Charlatan as a schoolmaster, jumped six hurdles. Magna Charta rapped some of the obstacles hard, but his display on the whole was highly satisfactory. Ho shapes like making a useful hurdler. . , . Prickles strode along freely in a working gallop of a mile and a-quarter, while Sudden Storm was given useful work over about six furlongs. These two and Impertinence are being got ready to represent sir George Clifford at the Dunetnn meeting nest month. -

TURF IN ENGLAND. THE CHESTER CUP. WIN 'FOR FIRST FLIGHT. Australian Press Association—United Service LONDON, May 8. At the Chester meeting to-day the leading event resulted as follows: THE CHESTER CUP; About 21 miles. FIRST FLIGHT, b hj, 4yrs, by Courageous—Florazie 1 DARK HILLOCK, b hj, 6yra. by Dark Legend—La Butte de Mesnil . . . . 2 POMAGNB, b m, 4yrs. by PommemServiceable 3 Twenty-two started. Won by a. neck, with three lengths between second and third. ROMAN ABBEY'S WIN. WONDERFUL JUMPING FAMILY Roman Abbey, winner of the Egmont Steeplechase yesterday, is trained in the Waikato by his owner, Mr. R. Hannon, who has been wonderfully successful with jumpers. Roman Abbey had won three races previously this season —the Hack Steeplechase at Ellerslie in October, the Hack Hurdles at Ellerslie at Easter and the Hack Hurdles at the last Avondale meeting. Roman Abbey is one of the horses which have been successfully operated on for throat and wind trouble. Like all the Quin Abbeys, ho is a very fine jumper. He is likely to keep on paying his way, though it is doubtful if he will ever stay well enough to win big events over longer distances. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES YESTERDAY MORNING'S WORK. BY ARCHER. The weather was fine for training operations at Ellerslie yesterday and some useful gallops were accomplished. There were a few gallops on the outside of the course proper, where the flags were out 30ft., and other tracks in use were the No. 1 grass, the sand and the tan. The going was dead after the recent rain and probably better on the course proper than elsewhere. Details of the work are as follows: COURSE PROPER. Gallops on this track were all recorded after the breakfast interval, when Respirator and Lido were first to use it and ran five furlongs in 1.9 4-5. Respirator was going very easily and could have done considerably better. From a flying start Lady Suzanne and Neil ran their first furlong in 12s and completed four furlongs in 535. There was little between them at the finish, where Lady Suzanne was tiring. A satisfactory effort went down to the credit of Standfast, who moved nicely over six furlongs in 1.23. He was accompanied over the first five furlongs by New Boy and they recorded 40 3-5s over the initial three. Standfast is looking all the better for his recent racing. Kamchameha and Master Doon were associated over a round ill 2.14 2-5, Kamehameha holding a, slight advantage at the end. Master Doon has not been working well and it seems doubtful whether he is going to return to form. Dave and Praetor sprinted four furlongs in 52 2-5s and were together at the end, with Dave going the easier. Dave is coming on nicely and should makp a lot of progress in <he next few weeks. Harbour View defeated Clockwork over sis furlongs in 1.24 2-5. Chelone, alone, ran six furlongs in 1.21 2-5. He went slowly over the first furlong and registered 1.6 1-5 over the last five. NO. 1 GRASS. Hyde Park strode along for seven furlongs at three-quarter pace and then did some trotting. The Cornwall Handicap candidate is very bright and a few gallops should tune him up nicely. Thursby hit out nicely while running six furlongs with Kawainga in 1.21 2-5. On a heavy track Thursby should race prominently in the Massey Memorial Cup. High Pitch (Fj. Ludlow) and Modest Boy (J. Conquest) were on terms at the conclusion of a round in 1.54 4-5. They ran the last six furlongs in 1.21 and both worked nicely. The Lover, with Corinax to assist in the early stages and Palmares over the last five furlongs, covered a round in 1.55 3-5. The pace was not on until The Lover reached the mile post and he registered 1.47 2-5 from that peg, the last sis furlongs taking 1.22 1-5. War Officer was better than Bayly Damon over six furlongs in 1.22 1-5. Chesterman also worked over- six furlongs, which he ran in 1.24 2-5. Sleepy Sol strode over six furlongs in 1.26 3-5. Bright Land moved freely over the same distance in 1.19. Gold Money pleased better than King Emerald over five furlongs in 1.5 4-5. W. Kemp's charges are in nice order to keep their engagements at Pukekohe, where both should be equal to racing well. AFTER BREAKFAST. Te Money gave Hard Prince a short start and beat him over five furlongs in 1.8 1-5. Theodolite and Eager Rose sprinted five furlongs in 1.7 1-5. Theodolite has a fair turn of speed and has made some improvement in the past few weeks. Sulla completed a useful task by running five furlongs in 1.11 4-5. Bonny Day also accomplished a serviceable task over the same distance, which she covered in 1.9 2-5. Bizarro and Diamond Queen reeled off five furlongs in 1.7 1-5. J. Ross has his charges in excellent trim for their engagements at Pukekohe. Roman Pearl pleased better than Brampton and Killute over six furlongs in 1.19. Roman Pearl appears to be making slight improvement and worked very nicely. Lady's Boy ran his first three furlongs in 39 4-5s and completed six in 1.22 2-5. Mountain Guide, who joined in at the threefurlong post, finished several lengths in front of his stable mate. Earlier in the week Lady's Boy worked with plenty of freedom, but again showed soreness yesterday. Welkne was responsible for six furlongs in 1.22 2-5. Day Form ran a furlong less in 1.10 and Taneriri was timed to run four furlongs in 53 l-ss. Otranto worked usefully and completed her task with five furlongs in 1.14 l-ss. Good Boy, who looka well, covered six furlongs in 1.20. THE JUMPERS. Potoanui (J. Sharkey) jumped a few hurdles and then did some useful pacing Lady Spalpeen (J. Sharkey) also cleared a few hurdles and did some pace work. Kauri Park (It. Olive) and Marita (J. Sharkey) set out together to jump four hurdles, but Marita blundered badly and gave his rider a nasty fall at the second fence. Fortunately Sharkey escaped injury. Kauri Park cave a sound display, fencing in his usual solid style. NOTES FBOM THE TRACK. O. Mclnally has been engaged to ride The Lover in the Massey Memorial Cup at Pukekohe. The six yearlings purchased st the Sydney sales by Mr. E. W. Alison, jun., have all been broken in by F. Gilchrist and fl_re now attending the traok daily at Ellerslie. The Emblematic—Tarlilian colt has been sold to Mr. F. J. Docherty and remains with his present trainer. The manner in which Gold Money hns been sprinting on the tracks indicates that she is likely to prove troublesome to the sprinters at Pukekohe, where she is in on the minimum in the Flying Handicap. On occasions Gold Money has not jumped out well when racing over short courses, but has behaved nicely at her latest outings. She will only require to begin decently to take a deal of beating in her coming engagement. |

Antrim Boy is reported to be one of the best maiden hurdlers that have been schooled at Wingatui for some time. Commenting upon the recent meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club, a southern writer says the only blemish on the fixture was an element of rough riding in several of the races. Prince Humphrey, who is so much in the limelight at the present time, is in the list of nominations for the Visitors' Handicap on the concluding day of the forthcoming meeting at Ellerslie. The Dunedin cross-country horseman, H. Anderton, is accompanying the teams of horses brought to the North Island by D. P. Wilson and F. Shaw and he will ride the jumpers whenever they start. The successes of Chide in the Hororata Cup and Rabbi in the Nelson and Waterlea Cups were particularly pleasing to Mr. Alf. Hill, who has their sire, Paladin, at his Moutua, Stud Farm (says a Dunedin writer). Since coming south Pa.ladin has been generally admired and this Eeason has been mated with mares which should add further winners to his credit. The three-year-old Toxeuma is at present enjoying a well-earned rest in Hawke s Hay. The hardy son of Arrowsmith has a wonderfully consistent record to his credit this season. He has started in 20 races and has only once been out of a. place. He has won six races, been second seven times and third on six occasions. Toxeuma a reappearance in the spring will be looked forward to with considerable interest. Glengariff, winner of the Tongahoe Hurdles at Egmont yesterday, is in the Great Northern Hurdle Raco weighted at 10.6. Last season as a six-year-old the sou of Bisogne Guidenoy started 13 times for one third place, that being in the Rata Hack Hurdles at Wanganui in May. Glengariff has performed much better this season, his record being:—Won Rahotu Hack Hurdles and Tarata Hack Hurdles at New Plymouth at Christmas time; won Okoke Hurdles at New Plymouth in February; second in Westmere Hurdles at Wanganui in February; second in Hack Hurdles at Opunake in March. PRINCE HUMPHREY CASE. JOCKEY CLUB ACTION. STUD BOOK-KEEPER TO REPORT. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received May 9, 10.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 9. FRANKLIN MEETING. TO-MORROW'S PROGRAMME. Fine fields are engaged at the Franklin Racing Club's meeting, to be held at Pukekohe to-morrow, and the necessity for divisions in two of the events will make the programnfe rather lengthy. The events to be decided will bo run off in the following order:—Trial Handicap, six furlongs (first division, second division): Ramarama High-weight Handicap, one mile and a furlong; Pukekawa Hack Handicap, seven furlongs and 22 yards; Mnssey Memorial Cup. 1} miles; Franklin Stakes, five furlongs (first division); Harrisville Flying Handicap, six furlongs; Franklin Stakes (second division); and President's Handicap, seven furlongs and 22 yards.
