DAMAGES FOR LIBEL.
EX-PRISONER'S ACTION. GAOL GOVERNORS NOW SUED. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. LONDON, April 30. Hayley Morris, who was sentenced to three years' ini])risonment for indecency after a sensational trial at Lewes, was again before the Courts yesterday. He was awarded £l5O damages against a newspaper for publishing details about his alleged relations with a woman, which the jury adjudged to be libellous. To-day Morris sued the Governors of Portsmouth and Pcntonville Gaols for alleged wrongful imprisonment. He contended that whereas he should have been released on July 20, 1928, he was actually released on July 21.
Morris stated in evidence that he had been unjustly deprived of five marks, which was equivalent to one day's extra imprisonment, because a warder reported him to tho Governor for talking in the prison yard when at daily exercise. Morris complained that ho had not been allowed to call evidence to rebut the charge. Plaintiff also alleged that the Governor of Portsmouth prison had been actuated by rnalico because he had refused the Governor's request to spy 'upon other prisoners. The hearing was adjourned.
