DUPLEX TRANSMISSION

USE OVER THE AIR. Experiments which it has been known have been proceeding for about two years for the use of wireless stations for simultaneous wireless telegraph and wireless telephone communication appear to have reached a point from which commercial development may be expected to begin. According to messages from Great Britain the beam service between Great Britain and America has been used successfully for simultaneous telephone and telegraph communication. This advanco represents a logical application of a practice which has been used on land telephone lines for many years. Few trunk telephone lines do not carry two duplex telegraph channels, in addition to one duplex telephone 'channel. The problems of dual transmission a wireless circuit, however, are enormously more complex than thosn encountered on land lines. Tho invention of the "carrier wave" telegraph and telephone system, by which a single conduct wire may be used to carry an indef • nite number of communication channels, provided tho starting point. After much difficulty the carrier wave system has been applied to tho beam. If further experiments are successful, wo may expect in tho near future to see the Australian beam services to Great Britain and Canada equipped with telephone apparatus. This apparatus should cost relatively little, and, as tho capital. costs of the completed stations will bo spread over' tho telephone service and the telegraph service, tho call charge to either Great Britain or Canada should be substantially less than tho rate of £ls a minute which is being charged on the long wave telephono service between Great Britain and the United States.
