MR. BAILDON TOPS THE POLL
EIGHT NEW COUNCILLORS. FIVE MEMBERS LOSE SEATS. CLOSE CONTESTS IN SUBURBS. Municipal elections took place throughout the Dominion yesterday. There were also pollu for the election of members of harbour, hospital, and power boards. The contest for the Auckland Mayoralty saw four candidates in the-field, and Mr. G. Baildon, with 7573 votes, returns to office for his third term. The contest for the Auckland City Council was notable for the fact that a newcomer, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, headed the poll with a substantial majority. Thirteen members of the old council have been returned. Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Water Committee of the council and chairman of the Transport Board, was defeated, as were also four other members of the last council. Close contests for suburban Mayoralties took place at Mount Albert, Onehunga and New Lynn, and in the case of the last-named the issue is still in doubt, Mr. C. F. Gardner at present leading Mr. H. O. Browne by nine votes with SO votes by declaration to be counted. A notable feature at Mount Eden was that four newcomers headed the poll for the Borough Council. For the Mayoralty of Wellington Mr. G. A. Troup was re-elected bv an increased majority. Mr. J. K. Archer, the Laibour candidate, is again Mayor of Christchurch, but his majority was reduced to 559. In Dunedin Mr. 11. S. Black was successful, the Labour candidate, Mr. F. J. Jones, who made a last-minute appearance, being third.
