SERVICE IN TWO WARS.
HEALTH INSPECTOR RETIRES. .'A farewell was tendered to Senior-In-spector R. Grieve, of tho Health Department, on Tuesday, on tho occasion of his retirement after 24 years' service. In presenting him with a full set of bowls on behalf of tho Auckland staff, Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical officer of health, rofcrred to Inspector Grievc's faithful service, ■ and expressed tho hope that ho would enjoy many, years of retirement. A New Zealander by birth, Inspector Grieve left Auckland in the sailing vessel Stanley in tho year 1890 to seek employment on tho Johannesburg goldfields. On arrival at Durban he learned that it was almost impossible to find work on the goldfields, and so joinod tho Durban police, rising to tho rank of sergeant. Ho soon became acquainted with tho language and customs of tho country, and experienced many adventures with gun-runners. In 1895 ho left Durban to talco up a moro important position on the diamond fields, and enlisted on tho outbreak of the Boer War. Ho took part in tho defence of Kimberloy, and manoeuvres in the Orange Free State, and was a member of tho flying column that first entered Maleking. Ho was later detailed for sorvice under tho Provost Marshal in Johannesburg, and became a member of the political branch of the intelligence department, a position which ho occupied until tho end of the war,
Inspector Grieve returned to New Zealand in 1904, and entered the service of tho Health Department. On the outbreak of tho Great War, ho enlisted, and saw service in Egypt and France, being discharged in Auckland in December, 1919.
