"NOT SUMMER RESORT."
ISLAND FOR INEBRIATES. PREFERRED TO THE PRISON. "Roto Roa Island is not to be regarded as a summer or winter resort by thieves and vagabonds who decide they want a chango and a rest," said Mr. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when it was stated that Albert Joseph Vance Ryan, aged 35, clerk, who appeared for sentence 011 a charge of falso pretences, desired to go to the island. "No doubt they would prefer it and the open life it affords to tho stone walls of Mount Eden prison, but they arc not going to get what they prefer," added the magistrate. Sentence of one month's imprisonment was passed on Ryan, who had obtained £5 from Thomas Glanville, at Riverhead, in October, 1927, with a valueless cheque. It was stated accused bad been in a mental hospital, Mount Eden prison and on Roto Roa Island. "He is a problem." said Chief-Detective Hammond in describing accused.
