DAIRY FACTORY BURNED.
TWO WEEKS' OUTPUT LOST.
OUTBREAK AT HORSHAM DOWNS. [BY —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Monday. Most of the factory buildings and plant of the Horsham Downs Co-operative Dairy Company were destroyed by fire this morning. The estimated loss is £SOOO, including about a fortnight's stock of cheese ready for export. Valuable machinery was destroyed and a new pasteuriser was badly damaged. Smoke was first noticed issuing from the roof of the main building by the wife of one'of the assistants. A bucket brigade was quickly organised. The structure, which was about 15 years old and of wood, burned fiercely, and the flames soon became out of control.
The factory manager, Mr. I. Underbill, sounded the warning whistle and summoned assistance from the neighbouring A call was received by the Hamilton fire brigade at 10 o'clock, and a good run was made to the scene of the outbreak. When the engine! arrived, however, the main buildings were burning fiercely, and the brigade was only able to save some of the smaller sheds. The and contents were insured in the Commercial Union Office. Tho insurance being £2OOO on tho factory, £I9OO on the machinery and plant, and £9OO on tho contents, making a total of £4BOO.
