SUPPLIES OF COAL.
IMPORTS UNNECESSARY. THE MINISTER'S CONVICTION. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Monday That it was possible for New Zealand to produce all tlio coal tlio country required was stated by the Minister of Mines, Hon. W. A. Veitch, at a gathering at Hamilton this evening of representatives of tlio miners, mineowners and mine managers.
Mr. Veitch said it was bad policy for New Zealand to be importing any coal. Last year 80 per cent, of the coal used on the railways had been produced locally. He was sure this percentage would be increased in the next, few years.
