THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. NEW WEEK OPENS QUIETLY. Tho new week opened quietly on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, when business was a little below tho a vera go volume. In local body debentures there was a salo of City of Auckland, 1939, 5J per cent., at £99 ss, against £97 at tho previous sale over a year ago. Current otters were mainly renewed for tho various classes of Government securities, but holders wero not tempted. In banks sellers of English, Scottish and Australians reduced their figure by 2s to £0 15s during tho day, buyers remaining at £8 14s 6d. These shares changed hands at £0 15s 6d last week. Nationals of Australasia were ("one at £l9 13s 6d, nil advance of sixpence on last week's market level, wliilo the contributing issue changed hands at £9 13s 6d, a drop of sixpence on last week's best price. Tho 1) pref. shares of the Hank of New Zealand had salo at 295, compared with 28s at tho preceding transaction early in February. There were no sales in the insurance section.

In gas Aucklands changed hands at 24s 4d, the ruling level, and in shipping Northerns wero done at 15s, also the current rate. In timber Kauris, which sold at up to 17s 9d last week, had inquiry at 18s, sellers 18s 6d. The remaining sections wero not productive of business, except mining, in which Wailiis wero done at 14s Id. an advanco of a penny, with more wanted at that price.
