GERMAN SLATES.
ROOFING OF SCHOOLS. PROTEST IN AUSTRALIA. A deputation from tho AustralianMnde Preference League protested io the Acting-Premier of New South Wales, Mr. Buttenshaw, in Sydney last week, against tho use of German slates in the construction of a public school building at Croydon Park. The deputation requested that the Government should specify, in all tenders for public schools for which, roofing slates were required, that preference should be given to Australian slates. It was claimed by tho deputation that German slates did not possess tho lasting quality of tho Australian product. Mr. Buttenshaw said it was the policy of the Government to give preference, wherever possible, to Australian materials. He was convinced that the Australian slate was better than the German sample that had been submitted, and he would sympathetically consider tho depuiatipq's request. "
