."Public opinion is ■ that some pf you intoxicated motorists should bo' sent to gaol," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.,:to James Patrick Shaw, aged 42, blacksmith, wlio pleaded guilty in the Police Court yesterday to a charge of having beeri intoxicated while in control:; of; a motor-truck in Belgium Street, City, on Saturday afternoon. Accused was fined £lO and his driver's licence was endorsed. !A prohibition order was issued against him, accused consenting. * "I would 'cancel your licence, Oilly. if I do that you will be out of work," said the magistrate.
Sub-Inspector McCarthy said Shaw had refused to take advantage of good luck which had come his way before ho was arrested. The sergeant, who arrested him had warned, him onco to lcavo ther truck uiid go home, but ho had taken no heed <>£ tho advice.. After tho, officer had left him accused started his truck and was caught driving -it in Belgium Street. After hearing tho evidence o| Shaw's employer, who gave accused a good character, the magistrate said ho did not wish to mako accused unemployed by depriving him of his licence or sending him to prison. However, ho requested the cmp oyer to discharge Shaw immediately ho touched liquor again. "You wcro lucky on Saturday and you are lucky to-day," said tho magistrate to accused. "But you might not bo so lucky if there is a acxt time:'"
