BROADCAST OF MUSIC.
POLICY. OF MR. VAILE.
MORE SCRIPTURAL ALLUSION. "THE THREE MIGHTY MEN." "Mr. Vaile is the only successful busi. ness man who, when requested by a deputation of his fellow-citizens, agreed to stand for the Mayoralty," said Mr. A. J. Hutchinson, who presided over an attendance of 300 people at the Remucra Library Hall last evening. "To my own knowledge more than three well-known business men were asked to do so and refused their services to the city in what I say is its hour of need. His opponents havo endeavoured to draw him into a battle of words and personalities and confuse the issue, which is: 'Are the electors of this city satisfied that- the present Mayor anil council are the best they can got V "
In liis address Mr. Va:lo claimed to be tho only candidate for the Mayoralty who had brought forward a policy. "While Mr. Bloodworth has been abusing the City Council and Mr. Murray has been abusing everybody, the Mayor ha been busy appropriating a few planks from my platform," ho declared. "I am pleased to know that Mr. Baildon has now become a great believer in the waterfront road, a thing ho was not very enthusiastic about before, and that Mr. Bloodworth lias become an ardent supporter of 'the city beautiful'."
Turning to Mr. Bloochvorth's metaphor of David and Goliath, Mr. Vailo thought tlio allusion rather inapt. "What possible resemblance Mr. Bloodworth can bear to that illustrious Jewish stripling known as David I have not the slightest idea," ho remarked. "Perhaps somo enlightenment may bo found in the Second Boole of Samuel, chapter 25, wherein it is said there were tlireo mighty men to support him, hut Mr. Bloodworth will require more tiiari that if ho is going to get in on Wednesday." (Laughter.) The caudidnto said tlio Herald had expressed itself as being frankly disappointed with his policy. "I have made no extravagant promises, my policy is concise and comprehensive, and it is what I intend to stand by," he added. Reference had been made to his lack of apprenticeship on the council, but when tho late Sir Arthur Myers stood for the Mayoralty that was not considered a disadvantage. After covering the points in his platform referred to in previous reports, Mr. Vailo dealt with tho question of tho broadcast of municipal music. "It is not the slightest use having an expensive and magnificent band unless all the ratepayers have a really good chance of hearing it," he declared. "I do not sav tho Broadcasting Company is offering enough money for it—l am not in a position to judge—but I will say that if I am elected I will make it my business to go into the whole question of municipal music. In my humble opinion, if conditions aro such that we cannot broadcast band music then we should do away with tho band altogether, because that is the way the bulk of the people hear it."
A vote of confidence in the candidate was declared carried.
Earlier in the evening the candidate addressed a meeting in the. recreation hall at tho Purewa Public Works camp.
