(Received April 20, 12.35 a.m.) LONDON, April 28. There were 12,000 spectators at tho Ryder Cup golf match. The fargest crowd followed the captains. Duncan rose to great heights, and never looked like losing the game against Hagen. The finish was most exciting. America held the lead by the one game of the foursomes, and could still save the cup by winning the three closing matches. Horton Smith brought his side within striking distance by defeating Robson, but Cotton, playing fine golf against Watrous, made the issue safe for Britain.

Two years ago, writes "Fairway," tho British Ryder Cup team, which visited America, was defeated at Worcester, Massachusetts, by matches to For some months now we have been reading of the preparations for tho renewal of this encounter. Before the end of 1928 the Americans had announced the names of a team of 10 players, and some weeks afterward Britain did the same. George Duncan was captain of the British, and Walter Hagen of the Americans. The two teams spent some days previous to tho match at Moortown, Leeds, the scene of the international encounters. Two _years ago at Worcester Duncan and Compston in the foursomes were defeated by 3 up and 6 by Johnny Farrell and Joe Turnesa, The same American pair this year met Compston and C. A. Whitcombe, probably the strongest British coupk, the result being a lialved match. I'arrell is the American open champion, and Turnesa was iust beaten on the winning post for the championship by Bobby Jones in 1926. Two years ago Whitcombe and Boomer beat Diegel and Melhorn in the foursomes by 7up and 5. Charles Whitcombe has not vet been beaten in a Ryder Cup match. Walter Hagen had a spectacular win a few weeks ago in Florida, when he and Diegel were 3 down and 10 holes to play against Farrell and Sarazen, when Hagen played particularly brilliant golf, and his side won by a hole. In the Ryder Cup match his partner was Johnnv Golden, the same combination as two vears ago. In 1927 they beat Ray and Robson V 2 and 1. Sarazen's partner of 1927, A 1 Watrous, did not play in the foursomes on Friday. Of the eight Americans who played in 1927 six played in tho foursomes on Friday. Dudley is a newcomer to tho American side, as are Espinosa and Horton Smith. Smith, who is 20 years old, comes from Missouri. He has won outright about eight open tournaments in America since January.
