HIGHER WAGE PROBLEM.
RATES IN AUSTRALIA. CONCERN AMONG EMPLOYERS. SYDNEY, April 27. The Acting-Premier, Mr. E. A. Buttensliaw announced to-day that automatically with Iho increase in (ho cost of living in Australia, the wages paid under federal awards will be increased correspondingly. 'J he latest increase of 4s in the Federal basic wage would involve an extra expenditure of 1!<125,000 chiefly in the railways and tramways services. This matter is causing concern among private employers and the Customs authorities, who say they cannot effectively control the tariff operations owing to tho ever recurring sharp rises in the cost of production. His feared that grave additional unemployment will soon result.
