LAND FOR SUBDIVISION.
MARLBOROUGH PROPERTY. Inquiries have been mado with the object of ascertaining what significance could be attached to tho presenco on the Ugbrooke Estate, with a survey party, of an official of the Marlborough Land and Survey Office. Members of the local Progress League, in the course of a discussion on closer settlement in Marlborough, observed that the " flagging " of the property, with a Government officer in attendance, had led to the impression that the estate was under offer to the Government for subdivisional purposes. On being approached the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr. P. R. Wilkinson), said that no official announcement could be made. Inquiries in another quarter, however, disclose that the Government has been approached by a syndicate or group, under the special provisions of the Land for Settlement Act, 1928, to acquire the estate for subdivision into four lots. The trustees under the will of the late Mr. H. D. Vavasour, have been communicated with by the Land Department, inquiring fcr certain information required for tho purpose of valuation of the property; and the trustees have been asked if they will provide all facilities at their disposal to enable a thorough examination of the property to be made by a Government valuation party, when a suitable date had been arranged. So far negotiations havo not proceeded beyond that staqe, and the survey that has been made has been for the purpose of the preparation of a detail station map, showing fencing and all other improvements, required in connection with the valuation.
