'Fire caused considerable damage to 4 shop in Symonds Stree€"'/Jast evening, Mrs. G, E'. Hyde, of 145, Ponsonby Road, who with her husband conducts tea. rooms and a confectioner's shop at 183, Symonds Street, was drying kindling wood in an oven at the rear of the premises about 10.30 o'clock when the wood caught alight. The flames quickly set the adjacent woodwork alight and the kitchen was soon ablaze. .
The City Fire Brigade quickly quelled the outbreak, but not before considerable damage had been done to the stock and fittings and the interior of the premises. The insurance on the building, which is owned by Mr. G. Winstone, was not available last evening. The policy on the stock and fittings was stated to be approximately £SOO. Fire damaged a barber's saloon occupied by Mr. E. Allan, at 15a, Karangahapa Road, and gutted a room and a passageway behind the shop at four o'clock yesterday morning. The City Fire Brigade prevented the flames from spreading to adjoining buildings. The contents of the saloon, which were slightly damaged by smoke, are insured in the London and Lancashire Office.
