PRACTICE GAMES PLAYED.

ELLERSLIE'S GOOD SHOWING.

Tho Auckland Rugby League opened its season at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when several interesting practice matches were played. Most of the teams tried out new players and good form was displayed for so early in tho season. Tho game between Devonport, last year's champions, and Elierslie proved interesting, Ellerslie'g play delighted the crowd, estimated at 2000. The club championship will commonco next Saturday. Following are details of the games played:— NEWTON V. RICHMOND. Both sides tried out new players, several making a good impression. Francis, of Newton, played a splendid game in the forwards, and Hardgrave was easily the best liack on the ground. In tho first, half the enme was evenly contested, neither side scoring. Early in the second half Ilardgravo kicked a penalty goal, and u. minute later scored a fino try. Johnson scored again for Newton, and added tho goal points. Tho game ended: Newton, 10. Richmond, 0.

CITY V. MAR IST. Marist did most of the attacking throughout, and after an interesting game won by fivo points to nil. In the second half tho Marist backs combined well and Moisley and Croniu carried play to City's line. From a scrum, D.uane secured and scored near the posts. Campbell converted. City' 3 backs had plenty of opportunities, but too much kicking lost ehunres of Bcoiing tries. Campbell, the Marist fullback, gave a sound display.

ELLERSLIE V. DEVONI'OIIT. Elierslie made a good impression in its game against, Devonporl. and the play was tlio best of the series. Elierslie was fust to score. Little-wood getting over near the corner. Good play by A. Scott enabled Devo'nport's backs .to get going, und Beattie scored a. nice try, which A. Scott converted. Olliff, Ellerslie'n halfback, beat tho defence in good style and passed to Hemingway, who was tackled on tho line. From a penalty. Olliff kicked n goal, and the eamo ended: Devon port, 5; Elierslie, 5 KINGSLAND V. NORTHCOTE. Kingsland defeated Northeote after on interesting gam© by J3 points to 8 Thomas.
