EVENING WITH DICKENS.
A 1 brief biographical sketch of Charles Dickens and his work was «iven hy Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, a vice-presi-dent of the Auckland Dickens Fellowship, last evening at a meeting of the Literary ( irein of tho Lyceum Club and tho very large and enthusiastic audience present was indeed a tribute to the famous author's memory and to hirj immortal work. The speaker was introduced hy tho president of the Lyceum Club, Mrs. W. 11. I'arkes. Genius, saiil Mrs. Gordon, had been truly defined as tho power of expression and this gift Dickens possessed to a remarkable degree. 'At an early age ho had realised that his fiift must be used for tho service of liumanity and he did much to alleviate the sordid misery and crime of tho world l>y his intense descriptions of those condition.? in some of his most famous hooks. Mrs. 'Gordon's speech was followed hy three character sketches from Dickens. These wero an impersonation of Nancy* in " Oliver Twist" by Mrs. D'Authreau; "The Elder Mr. Wel- ■ ler," a comic sketch from Pickwick ' given by Mr. 0. G. Grant; and a ''■f "i/, dramatic skefel).
