DEVONPORT BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
Sir _His Worship the Mayor has issued an appeal to ratepayers to support two small loan proposals to be voted for 011 the Ist prox. in connection with the council election. I feel sure ratepayers will support the council in these two matters, the alternative being that the amounts must come out of the rates, the borough already being committee] to tho expenditure by a former council. Howover, I think the time is opportune for tho Mayor to consider the reorganisation of tho borough engineering department. This department is staffed with two certificated engineers at a> cost of eight hundied and fifty pounds per annum, _ plus tho cost of motor-cars. Surely, in such a small borough like Devonport, with no cash available for the upkeep or improvement of thp secondary streets which, by tho way, are in a deplorable condition, some effort should be made to effect economv in this direction. W. M. Chapman.
