RABBITS ON PROPERTY.
FINE IMPOSED ON FARMER. [BY telegraph.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WAIPUKUR AU, Friday. A farmer, Donald McLeod, tho owner of 1901 acres at Porangahau, was charged in tho Magistrate's Court to-day, on the information of the Hawkc's Bay Rabbit Board, with failing to take adequate steps to copo with the destruction of rabbits. The defence was that, although poisoning and other methods had been employed, rabbits came from surrounding properties. Tho magistrate, Mr. Mo'wlem, said it did not matter where the rabbits came from; the onus was on defendant to tako reasonable steps to check tho pest. Tho law governing the matter could not bo flouted, and any breaches must be treated seriously, in view of the heavy losses caused by rabbits in other parts of the Dominion Defendant was fined £lO.
