WIDER HIGH STREET.
ACQUIRING STRIP OF LAND
OFFER BY CITY COUNCIL
Proposals for continuing the widening of High Street on the Outhwaite block frontage were before the Auckland City Council last evening in connection with the subdivision of the area.
The suggestion is to take a si rip of land with a Montage of 3ft. to Victoria Street, and diminishing to nothing at the northern boundary of the property, and ;ilso to round off the Street and Kitchener Street corners by taking a triangular piece with an Bft. frontage to all the streets involved. The owners of the land, Unique Properties, Ltd., advised the Works Committee of its acceptance of the proposals and asked for £I6BO as compensation for the land taken. The late city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, reported that the area required for widening Hig'.i Street was .53 perches, or approximately 1 per cent, of the whole block. For the crrncrs .23 perches, or less than one-half per cent, of the block was required. As the total cost of the block was £57,500 be considered the amount that should be paid should not exceed £BOO. although the city valuer, Mr. I'. F. Notley, had fixed the value at £9OO.
The council decided to offer £6OO with out prejudice.
