THE CITY COUNCIL.
PROGRESS AT HUIA DAM. GARAGE LOAN PROPOSAL. The final meeting of tho City Council as at present constituted was hold last evening, tlio Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, presiding. A donation of £lO 10s was made toward tlio cost of new colours for the First Battalion, Auckland Regiment. A recommendation that the double shift ;it (lie Huia dam works should be abolished was made by Iho acting-city engineer, Mr. .J. Tyler. The main work had now reached tlio stage when Iho two shifts were not warranted. They would no! expedite I lie completion of the work by one month and tlio extra shift was costing £l5O to £l6O. The report was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. The continuation of Curran Street around the foot of Point Lrin Park to provide road access to St. Mary's Bay was recommended bv the Parks Committee, which had conferred on the subject with the. Harbour Board. The only access to the bay now is by a short flight of steps at the font of St. Mary's Road, and it is considered impossible to grade down within the limits of the road. The council accepted Iho recommend.il ion, which will involve the taking of a strip of the park property. Renewed application is to be made to (lie Local Government Loans Board foi authority to lake ;i poll on the raising of £IO.OOO for tbe erection of a garage at the corner of C'ook and Albert Streets. The board is to he advised that the council has no revenue available for the purpose, and, in its opinion, capital expenditure of such a nature should be authorised by a poll of ratepayers.
