THE BLACKBERRY.

Many aro the attempts that have been made to exterminate the blackberry, but all have failed. A large sum of money has been offered for something to destroy this noxious weed, but it seems to be indestructible. Certain chemicals have been tried, and have appeared to kill it for a time, but it has always come up again. Burning is useless; digging is the same; and lots of ways of killing other weeds

have proved of no use on tho blackberiy. But, still—perhaps in some ways it would be rather a pity to rid ourselves of it altogether. Think of the way children love ?o go blackberrying and collect basketsfull of the juicy berries, and stain their lips and hands with them! Think also of tlie lovely jam that can be made of berries from" the more refined plants. Yes, it is truly a hard task to know what to do about it! Original. By Mollie Butler-Williams (ago 12), 170.
