CONTESTS IN THE CITY* LABOUR MAYORAL ASPIRANT. CANDIDATES FOR COUNCIL. Tlio first nomination for tho Mayoralty of tho city, that of Mr. T. Bloodworth, the Labour Party's candidate, was received by tho returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley, yesterday. Mr. Bloodworth was also nominated for tho council and tho Harbour Board. Tho dual nomination as Mayor and councillor is made under authority of legislation passed by Parliament last year. Previously a candidate could be nominated only for the council or for the Mayoralty, and tho result was that communities were sometimes deprived ot tho desirablo services of men who had long experience ill municipal activity. When a candidate for tho two ollices is appointed Mayor his riamo is not considered when making up tho tally of successful councillors. Other nominations received for the council are thoso of Mr. J. \V. Kealy, Mr. J. B. Paterson, Mr. G. G. Ashley, Mr. 1). Donaldson, Mr. F. W. Matthews, Mr. 11. Woodroff, Mr. F. W. Schramm and Mrs. E. G. Mackv. Mrs. M. M. Dreaver has been nominated for tho Hospital Board. Another Hospital Board nomination is that of Mr. \V. K. Hovvitt, of Devonport, standing in the in(crests of the combined North Shore boroughs seat. BIRKENHEAD CONTESTS. MORE COUNCIL CANDIDATES. Additional candidates announced for (lie Birkenhead Borough Council are Messrs. Arnold Paterson and F. Morris. Mr. Morris has heeii a member of the Blount Eden Borough Council for some years. In furtherance ot his candidature for the Birkenhead mayoralty Mr. E. C. .Walton addressed a meeting in the Bilkdale Hall last evening. Mr. A. Campbell presided. Dealing with the sewerage scheme Mr. Walton said ho would offer vigorous opposition to tho exclusion from tho special drainage rating area of any land held for commercial purposes. Now that the Harbour Bridge Association had taken the preliminaries so far and that tho Government grant of £SOO had been voted for investigation of the bed of the harbour ho felt it was imperative that a board, similar to a power board, with local body powers, should lie set up to make all decisions in connection with investigations, planning the work and raising loans. MORRINSVILLE MAYORALTY. NOMINATION OF MR. McPHERSON. [nv TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] itORRINSVILLE, Friday. At the request of a large deputation headed by Mr. S. Chapman, deputymayor, Mr. W. McPherson, Mayor of Morrinsville, has consented to accept nomination for a further term of oflice. Mr. McPherson, who is in practice locally as a solicitor, was elected Mayor of Morrinsvillo on the retirement from that office of Mr. S. S. Allen, on bis appointment Mi Administrator of Samoa. Coulter, Mayor of Tc Aroha, has announced his intention of again accepting nomination. Mr. Coulter has been connected with the Borough Council for tho past 12 years, and has been Mayor for eight years. It is understood he will not be opposed. SITUATION AT FAEROA. MR. MARSHALL'S INTENTIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. I I'AEROA, Friday. A large deputation of ratepayers to-day waited on Mr. William Marshall, Mayor of Paeroa, requesting him to consent to nomination as Mayor for a further term. Tho deputation was led by Messrs. E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt and P. E. Brenan. members of tiio present council. Mr. Marshall expressed pleasure at tho sentiments voiced by the deputation, and promised to give the request serious consideration and to give a definite answer on Monday.
