TAXATION ON MOTORS.

SUGGESTION OF REDUCTION. LOCAL BODIES NOT OVERLOOKED [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI. Friday. The Whangarei County Council, in common with other local bodies in No. 1 highways district, took strong exception to a statement recently made by the Hon. H. Atmorc, Minister of Education, when speaking at Nelson, that motor taxation must be reduced in tho near future. The Prime Minister was communicated with and replied to to-day's meeting of the council that the remarks applied to heavy motor-lorries. The matter had not yet been considered by the Cabinet, but would be duly brought before it at a later date. Sir Joseph Ward said he fully recognised that in making any adjustment of the kind the question of the position of local bodies, as far as they were affected financially in the upkeep of roads, should not. he overlooked. When the matter was being dealt with every interest, including local bodies throughout the country, would have an opportunity of considering anv proposals which might be put forward bv the Government and submitting their ■ eprescntat ions. The reply was considered most satisfactory.
