STATE COALMINES.
CO-OPERATIVE WORKING. MR. VEITCH IN FAVOUR. Replying to a query in Christchurch the Hon. W. Veitch, Minister of Mines, said he was fully in accord with the policy of his predecessor of endeavouring ultimately to have the Stato mines operated on the co-operative principle. If the miners saw the desirability of accepting an arrangement whereby they undertook the delivery of coal at "certain points at an agreed price, supplying all the incidental labour, he would be willing to put such a scheme into practice. It is worthy of note that somo sections of the State mines were previously operated on this principle, but the Union raised strong objections and a prolonged strike occurred, the effort to extend tho system eventually being abandoned.
