DISMISSAL OF LINESMEN.
LACK OF WORK THE REASON.
POSTMASTER-GENERAL'S REGRETS
No hope of retaining the services of a number of telegraph linesmen recently dismissed is held out by the PostmasterGeneral, the Hon. J. B. Donald, in answering an appeal by Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., who snid it would be disastrous to add to the number already unemployed. "I would be the last to bring undue hardship to any of the men in the Post and Telegraph Department," wrote the Minister. "However, you will fully realise that when there is no work available it would not be right for my department to keep men on the pay-roll." The Minister admitted that procedure had been followed in the past, but he considered it was unwise and led to all sorts of complications. Ho assured Mr. Savage that tho services of no employees were being dispensed with when there was any work available which they could do. Concluding, the Minister said he felt sure the steps the Government was taking to overcome the unemployment situation would greatly assist in time, and he could only hope tho men who had lost their positions with the department would find employment under (he scheme being instituted by tho Government.
