WHEAT DUTIES.
CANTERBURY ATTITUDE. OPPOSING PROPAGANDA. Propaganda in the North Island in favour of reducing the wheat and flour duties was the subject of a motion carried at a meeting of the North Canterbury executive of tho New Zealand Farmers' Union.
The discussion was taken in committee, and the following motion, moved by Mr. J. D. Hall was carried:—
"That any reduction in tho protection afforded to wheat growers by altering the duties on wheat and flour is unfair and inequitable, inasmuch as the present tariff provides the only means of working our arable lands to capacity and also provides work for larga numbers of iarm labourers and mill handt at fair wages, which would otherwise have to be provided for by Government jo?i:>; that other farmers' organisations in i.he South Island and also the Chamber of 'Commerce bo invited to co-operate in tin' direction of countering the propaganda i>ow being circulated in the North Island i\ir the purpose of reducing wheat and flo\;r duties, and that the provincial executives in Canterbury and Otago be asked to iako the matter up."
