RAILWAY PROPERTY.
SCHEME TO ENSURE CARE. PERIODICAL STOCKTAKINGS. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday. The general manager of railways, Mr. If. If. Sterling, is directing a vigorous campaign to ensure the greatest possible caro of the department's property, such as furniture, office fittings, plant and tools, and tlio most economical use of consumable stores.
Instructions recently issued to district officers, stationmasters and others concerned provide for the keeping of records and periodical stocktakings, and reports regarding all equipment and stores. In the case of consumable stores, stock will be taken at March 31 next, and at intervals of four weeks from that date. Before property is included in returns for writing off it will bo necessary for surveys to be made personally by the responsible persons, and the records of theso surveys are to be open for inspection by Government and railway audit inspectors. Where (he consumption of stores appears excessive, a closo investigation will bo rnado into the custody and issuing of supplies.
