THEFTS OF CLOTHING.
TWO MEN SENT TO GAOL. PROSECUTIONS AT WHANGAREI. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Monday. The theft of several articles, of a total value of £ll 17s 6d, had its sequel in the Whangarei Police Court to-day, before Messrs. J. S. Dent and F. Farmer, J.P.'s, when William James Smith and James Silby were charged with stealing two pairs of boots, valued at £2 17s 6d, the property of W. Maine, and one suit of clothes and seven pairs of socks, valued at £5 10s, the property of R. G. Hosking. Smith was also charged with stealing one suit of clothes, valued at £3 15s, the property of Henry Wilson.
" It, is <i very serious matter," said Senior-Sergeant O'Grady, in asking for a severe penalty. The two men had been in the town since Thursday looking for work, and had been sleeping on the waterfront. They had been loafing about the town. Later, they took lodgings, and the stolen poods were discovered under a lied in the lodgings.
Each accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on each charge, and an order was made for the return of the stolen goods.
