ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. " Inquirer."—Cashier ran second to Nightmarch in the New Zealand Derby. "Skyscraper." Devcnport. Reremoana carried 0.11 when he won 'he A.R.C. Easier Handicap in 1326. A.P.—The yiew Zealand record tor six iuricng3 is im 9 4-5s and is held conjointly by The Hawk and Chimera. The Hawk put up his record for the distance named m r.he decision of the Waterloo Stakes at Trentham on January 25. 1322, in which race he carried 9.2. Chimera's lecord was connected with the Templeton Handicap run at Siccarton on April 18, 1322, and she also carried 3.2.

NOTES BY PHAETON. AMERICA'S CHAMPION COLT. The prospects of America being represented in this year's Ascot Gold Cup serves to invest the impending contest for tiiat historical event with a wide interest. Run over the loug distance of two miies and a-quarler. a horse requires to be a firstrater to win. Americaa sportsmen boldly declare that Reigh Count is entitled to be 30 estimated and that " old England" wiii have to put her best in the field to cope with the American colt. Heigh Count was the undisputed champion of 1328 m his own. country. A reference to the records shows that the American colt in 1323 won seven times out of eight 3tart3 and his sole defeat was due to an attack of cohc. On lieigh Count's arrival in Engiand the racing critics were apparently not unduly im pressed with the American coit and one of the best-known writers penned the following:—" The American three-year-old :s a rough-and-ready sort of customer, who looks far more useful than ornamental. He has all the appearance of a stayer and his record proves that, whatever his speed may be. there can be no doubt whatever about his stamina." MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. Admiral Drake, who figures top-weigbt with 8.7 in the Sapling Stakes, to be run at the Napier Park meeting to-day, has so far only succeeded in winning ons .race, but, by all accounts, he is a promising sort. Admiral Drake is by Chief Ruler from Tame Duck. A frc«h two-year-old mentioned among the New South Waies-owned division as likely to play a prominent part in the settlement of important event 3at the Australian Jockey Club's forthcoming autumn meeting is Pentheus Iby Rossendaie—Cereica). Gilt Edge (by Vaiais —Glittering Goldl, who cost the Melbourne sportsman ilr. A. T. Craig 5000gna when he bought the then youngster as a yearling in the autumn of 1327. has not so far justified hia purchase at the sum named, and, a3 the colt was handicapped at 7.13 in a seven-furlong race at Flemington recently, he is not rated highly. In the race mentioned Gilt Edge ran a dead-heat with Pecuma (6.9.). Toseuma can apparently be ticked off to make an early reappearance under silk, and he may be found among the contestants for the New Zealand St. Leger when that event comes up for decision at Trentham on the ISth inat. The son of Arrawsmith was well beaten into third place in the decision of the Great Northern Derby, and, with the St. Leger journey extending two furlongs further than that attached to the Derby, it may be doubted if that will be in favour of Tcseuma.

At the sale of Mr. .7. M. Samson's horses at Trentham in January the five-year-old Battlement fell to the bid of Mr. J. Gaicnby, of Hastings, at 175gns. Battlement proved an unsatisfactory speculation to Mr. Samson, for he failed to win. a single rice for the Dunedin sportsman. A changa from south to north has now come about for Battlement and that may possibly play a part in bringing about improved form in the Martian jeldmg. Battlement is i engaged in tiie Napier Cup (li miles), to | ba run to-day, in which race he has been i awarded the handy impost of T. 6. NAPIER PARK MEETING. FIRST DAY'S EVENTS. The fields at Napier to-morrow will be or good class for this fixture. and the racing will have some hearing on the Trentham meeting a week later. My Own and Admiral Drake ar» likely to divide favouritism in the Sapling Stakes. My Own is a very promising filly.

Joy Kins and White Fang. at th® weights, will have friends for the Napier Cup. Singleton gallops well and the track conditions should suit Blimr and High Court. Blimp at 7.7 is nicely treated. The Swell seems to bo in his right placa in the Autumn Handicap. Merry Mint. i£ started ia this event, may ran well. Ma lahat will not he on hand to contest the Maiden Scurry. Dainty Ways and Blackpool are two likely improvers. R. Johnson has both Ridgemount and Bonogne in the Flying Handicap. Kaihoro Jeanette are two likely gallopers with modest weights to carry. Grand Acre, Rory More and Atholspear. top-weighta ia tha Redciiff Handicao. are solid gallopers. Topere. if well ridden, may be prominent. NOTES FROM PUKEKOHE. £BT TSLEGJRAPH. —OWN COBREOTONDBNT. ] PCKEKOHE. Thursday. With the rain that has fallen during the past few days the Pukekohe racecourse is now in ideal condition for the race meeting ou Saturday, and it will only reauire fine weather to ensure a "upital day' 3 snort. Owing to rain failing track work this morning was restricted for the most part to easy pacing. W. Schollum'a two-year-old. Helium, worked in company with the two-year-old Cymon, from EL B. Cowan's team. Big Bertha and Hone Heke worked together over live furlongs. Green Bonnet travelled six furlongs without company. Royal Blood and True Blood covered half a mila separately.
