OBITUARY.

MR. W. H. SAIES. The death has occurred at Saies, Whangaroa, of Mr. W. H. Saies, senr., aged 81, one of the oldest residents of the district. Born at Haverford West, Wales, in 1848, Mr. Saies came to New Zealand at the age of 18 in the ship Lancashire Witch, which did the trip in the record time of 110 days. He settled at Whangaroa, and his earlier days were spent in bush-working, pit-sawing and timbermilling in the employ of Messrs". Lane and Brown, for whom as a pit-sawyer he cut the timbers used in the first two vessels built by that firm. During the past 44 years he had been in business as a general storekeeper, first as manager for Mr. Knee, at Totara North, and later on his own account at Saies. In 1898 Mr. Saies was appointed postmaster and registrar of births, deaths and marriages at Saies, which post he held until a few days before his death. He was the senior justice of the peace in the North. For the past 44 years he had been a Freemason and a brother of the Zealandia Lodge, serving three terms as worshipful master. Mr. Saies was predeceased by his wife some two years ago and leaves one son. The funeral was held at Saies, with the usual Freemason ceremony, and was largely attended. Glowing tribute to the late Mr. Saies was paid by his native friends, who mourned the loss of one regarded by them as a chief.

MR. JOHN HESLOP. [B-S TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION*. ] NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. The death occurred to-night of Mr. John Heslop, at the age of 90. Mr. Heslop was one of tho best known of Taranaki pioneers. He came to New Zealand in 1857 and after farming successively in Hawke's Bay, tho South Island, Hawke's Bay again and Wanganui he finally becaino established in Taranaki. Among a host of public positions he was for 27 years a member of the Taranaki Land Board. Ho was a member of the fust cavalry regiment raised in Hawke's Bay. Ho went through tho Maori War and possesses tho New Zealand Medal. He was arbitrator for tho Public Trustee in the West Coast leases dispute.

MR. E. J. KEMNITZ. [Bi T TEI.ECRAPU.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NELSON, Wednesday. The death occurred this morning of Mr. E. J. Kcnmitz, a member of the legal firm of Fell and Harley, at tho age of 34. Mr. Kemnitz was educated at tho Otago Boys' High School, and after joined tho staff of tho Magistrate's Court at Invereargill, where ho qualified as a solicitor. Ho was for various periods stationed at Magistrates' Courts near Invereargill until 1915, when ho canio to Nelson. For somo time ho was acting Crown Solicitor, and since 1920 had been secretary of tho Nelson Law Socioty. , Mr. Kemnitz had represented Invereargill and later Wellington in inter-provin-cial cricket matches. In 1922 ho was captain of the victorious Nelson Hawke Cup team, and he had been a member of the Nelson eleven ever since. Ho leaves a widow and one daughter.
