DEVONPORT BOROUGH.
POISON GAS CHAMBER.
COUNCIL WANTS REPORT. Tho Devonport Borough Council met last evening, tlio Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, presiding. It was decided to approach the Public Works Department with a view to obtaining a subsidy for tarring and sanding footpaths within tho borough. So that the work should bo comprehensive it was decided to prepare an estimate for all (he footpath work necessary. On tho recommendation of tho engineer it was decided to take steps to improve the corner at (ho junction of Albert and Lake Roads. The engineer pointed out tho grave danger to traffic and pedestrians caused by tho sharp turn and tho poor visibility. Tho sum of £241 lis Id was received from tho Main Highways Board as tho borough's proportion of tho petrol tax for tho quarter ended December 31. The Wukatero Canoe Club applied for permission to erect a clubhouse and canoo shed on Narrow Nock Beach. Tho Mayor said he thought the council should consider erecting a building which would accommodate bathing sheds as well as the clubhouse A sub-committeo was appointed to investigate tho proposals. It was decided to request the Marine Department to furnish a full report regarding tho proposal to erect a shed in (he vicinity of tho naval depot for the training of naval reservists and cadets in poison gas drill, the report to be forwarded boforo permission is granted to erect tho shed. The Marine Boroughs' Association requested an expression of opinion regarding the proposals of tho Harbour Bridge Association. After a lengthy discussion a resolution was carried that the council was in favour of a full departmental inquiry into the bridge proposals, but was not prepared to commit itself to any scheme until ell methods of modernising the transharbour traffic had been thoroughly investigated.
