HAY'S CREEK.

Sir, —The article in Saturday's Supplement by Miss Morton, is well-timed—in fact, one wonders why the local authorities have not taken action months ago and put a stop to the vandalism masquerading under the name of a commercial undertaking. The metal from the quarry can be cleaned without detriment to the beautiful stream, and why the local branch of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society has not exercised its powers is beyond understanding, for thousands of rainbow-fry have been liberated, and fish up to nine inches long are in . the upper waters, while hundreds of dead fish have been strewn on the banks below the quarry. If the farmers whose water supply is affected, the Beautifying Society, and the Hunua Riding member of the Franklin County Council cannot exert sufficient pressure to cause the pollution to cease, I am quite satisfied that the department which controls acclimatisation would promptly settle the matter, as has been done already in districts where flax and timber are milled. No private enterprise should be allowed to destroy a beauty spot which has proved such a boon to the wayfarer and the picnic party. Interested.

Sir, —May I congratulate Miss Elsie K. Morton upon her article in your issue of the 2nd instant, regarding the spoliation of the above creek by pollution of its waters. The stream has for many years been known to lovers of nature as one of Papakura's "beauty spots," and its pollution has been a matter of much concern. It is refreshing to read that the abatement of the nuisance has been promised. One wonders at the apathy of the farmers, through whoso properties the stream passes, in allowing the nuisance to continue for so long. The pollution of the water must have given them grave concern, and yet little appears to have been done to prevent that pollution until quite recently. Presumably it cannot be generally known that the law will grant an injunction restraining pollution and spoliation in cases such as this. Lex.
