MR. CHARLES HAINES.

PIONEER IN ADVERTISING.

The death occurred in Wellington this morning of Mr. Charles Haines, head of the well-known advertising agency which bears his name.

Mr. Haines had for many years resided in Wellington. He was born in Cir.-isl-church in December, 1862, and was educated at the Christchurch High School and Trent College, Notts, England. He was on the head office staff of the Now Zealand Railways from 1879 to 1885, rod after leaving that service engaged in journalism, being for several years associated with the late Mr. Payton on the Wairarapa Daily Times, of which lie eventually became managing editor. In 1891 Mr. Haines came to Wellington, and founded the first advert: ing agency organised in New Zealand. In those days it was a novelty for a spcj'ulist to act as representative of both i ,ie newspaper press and the business fir us as advertising agent, but by his ability, thoroughness and tho high standard of service provided he made a great success in the new venture.

The business of the Charles Haines Advertising Agency steadily expanded, until he had a staff of over 70 in his employment, with branch offices in each of the main centres and connections abroad. Established by Mr. Haines, and conducted by him personally for many years, the advertising business was ultimately formed into a company, in which many of the founder's old employees became substantial shareholders. In business Mr. Haines was the soul of honour and thoroughness.. Ho was generous to a degree, but his generosity was known only to himself and those it benefited, and the friends he made remained his friends as long as they lived. Mr. Haines had many interests outside his business. Ho had a 'discriminating taste in literature, pictures and antiques, and was fond of tennis and hockey. He is survived by Mrs. Haines.
