DROWNED IN MANUKAU.
OPENING OF THE INQUEST.
An inquest concerning the death of Richard Madden, who was drowned at the Whatipu landing, near the Manukau Heads, on Saturday evening, was opened at Onehunga yesterday, before Mr. D. A. Sutherland, district coroner. Nicolai Gunerius, a Norwegian, said Madden was his brother-in-law. Mrs. Madden died about two years ago, and deceased had since been living in a boarding house Jit Newmarket. He linrl been employed by the Auckland City Council. The coroner adjourned the inquest sine die, when evidence will bo given by some of the party of 19 who accompanied deceased to the Manukau Heads in a launch on Saturday afternoon, and also by Dr. James Kirkwood, who conducted a postmortem examination.
