Statistics just published by the Department of Commerce at Washington show that the nation's bill for cosmetics, toilet preparations and perfumes for 1927 reached the colossal total of £35,418.200. Among the items of expenditure are the following:—

Face powders, £5,385,000; creams, £5.995.600: perfumes, .£3,055.000; hair dyes, £2,912.400. An unclassified, item called " Other toilet preparations" accounts for £6,043,000.
