YACHTING.

ROYAL YACHT SQUADRONTHE HORTON BEQUEST. CLOSE WIN FOR WAIRIKI. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a general handicap on Saturday for first and second-clss yachts, and also a race for class M. The big race brought out 16 competitors, and was won by Mr. S. R. Speight's Wairiki, which beat Messrs. Hume and Creagh's Thelma by the narrow margin of nine seconds. The conditions were ideal for yachting, a fresh breeze from north-east by north blowing, veering at times to north-east and back to almost north. The course was from starting-line o2 King's Wharf, round the Bastion boacon, thence down the Rangitoto Channel to the Saltworks beacon, back to the Bastion beacon, out again to the Saltworks, back to the Bastion, and finishing at King's Wharf, distance about 15 miles. The first prize was' £2O from the Horton Beauest, second £7, third £3 and fourth £l. The mce was started on the Mark Foy system, the handicaps being given at the start. Delville, the limit boat, was sent away first at 2.15, but returned and did not recross until after the Becond boat. Scout, started. The last boat to start was Ariki (scr), which was sent away at 2.51. The order of the boats crossing the starting-lino was: Scout, Delville, Rangi, Wairiki, Yiindward. Ida, Waione, Kotiri, Moana, Victory, Rawene, Prize, Nga-Toa. Thelma. lorangi, Ariki.

It was a close haul to the Bastion, and by the time Ariki started Scout, Wairiki and Windward were actually round the Bastion making for the Channel mark. On the beat out to Saltworks Rawene passed Moana and Nga-Toa. Nga-Toa had a mishap to her jib, and did not do 100 well in the hard breeze. Thelma, on the other hand, found the conditions to her liking, and, after passing Nga-Toa, Prize and Moana, she had the misfortune to carry away her jib, which lost her some time. With the exception of Prize and Ariki. which worked the Narrow Neck shore for some minutes, all the boats stood further across the channel toward the Rangitoto shore. Later both Prize and Ariki broke tacks and followed the other boats. Rawene was watching Prize very closely, the two boats making a good, race of it. * Scout, Wairiki and Windward rounded Saltworks in that oxder, all close, then came Rangi, Ida, Waione, Kotiri, Rawene. Thelma, Prize. Nga-Toa. Moana, lorangi, Victory and Ariki at intervals. Spinnakers were set for the run to tho Bastion, anjj before the White Light was reached .Wairiki passed Scout.
