LINDSAY BEATEN BY STOKES. [by telegraph.—press association] WELLINGTON. Sunday. The New Zealand amateur swimming championships were commenced at Wellington yesterday. In the first heat of the men's 100 yds. championship W. Cameron (Wellington) reduced by 2-5s the record of 57 2-5s by N. Dowsett (Wanganui). In the final Cameron did even better. He covered the distance in 55 4-ss, or 1 3-5s better than Dowsett's record. Results were: — 100 YARDS MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP. First Heat. W. Cameron (Wellington) .. ..1 C. Claridge (Wellington) . . Cameron took the lead and was the first to turn. He covered 50yds. in 255. Dowsett and Farrell kept level, but Claridge fouled the ropes and lost way. In the last 25yds. Cameron increased his lead and won by 2yds. from Dowsett, Claridge beating Farrell for third place by a touch. Time, 55 4-ss—a New Zealand record. 100 YARDS LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss E. At 75yds., however, Miss Stratton was beaten, and the race was then between Miss Stockley and Miss Miller. The former won by the narrowest of margins. Miss Grant beat Miss Stratton by a touch for third place. Time, 68s. ONE MILE MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP. A. Stokes (Canterbury) . . . • 1 D. P. Lindsay (Auckland) . . .. 2 G. Bridson (Auckland) .. ..3 Stokes took the lead from the start, and after 220 yds. had been covered in 2m 37s the order was Stokes, Lindsay and Bridson, with Ryland falling behind. When half the distance had been swum in llrn 40s Stokes had further increased his lead from Lindsay to 15yds. Stokes kept up steadily and won by about 10yds. Time, 40m 0 4-ss.
